Lovely Alitzah Grant and I have been collaborating again with this gorgeous single skein shawl/neckerchief that will be perfect for cooler spring days when you just need a little extra warmth
Alitzah has named her pattern after Persephone, daughter of Demeter, the Greek goddess of the Earth.
The myth about this mother and daughter was devised by the Ancient Greeks to explain the changing seasons in a time before people had full scientific understanding
Persephone was kidnapped by Hades, God of the Underworld and taken away to be his wife.
Demeter warned her daughter not to eat anything or she'd be trapped there forever - unfortunately Persephone didn't listen to her mother (an age old story!) and ate 6 pomegranate seeds
So when Hades was finally presurized into releasing her he demanded that she come back to the underworld for 6 months a year - one month for each seed eaten - and that is how Autumn/Winter versus Spring/Summer came about
When Persephone was in the underworld Demeter grieved and so flowers and crops stopped growing and the ground froze over, when she returned everything started to bloom again as the Goddess of the Earth was happy once more - well, for 6 months at least!
My friends in the shop weren’t that bothered about the whole Greek Myth bit and got quite cross about Persephone only eating pomegranate seeds - why didn’t she just have a sausage roll if she was hungry?! 😂
Each Persephone shawl kit will contain:
a 100g hand dyed skein of Truly Scrumptious 70/20/10 Blue Faced Leicester/Silk/Cashmere 4ply
